Untangling a 68,000-Page Website
Our initial crawl returned nearly 68,800 unique URLs, but much of that volume came from decades of accumulated content and technical debt, including auto-generated proceeding pages, outdated archives, and fragmented content structures that made the site difficult to navigate and maintain. The challenge was to untangle this sprawling content ecosystem and simplify it into something users could actually use. After a full information architecture audit, we reorganized the site into four primary sections: Events, Publications, Resources, and About, creating a clearer, more scalable foundation for thousands of pages and assets.

A Better Way to Browse Thousands of Conference Proceedings
Conference proceedings represented one of the site’s largest and most important content collections, with thousands of individual records spanning decades of events. We designed a scalable browsing and filtering experience that allows users to navigate by conference, date, or category, while still supporting direct search when users know exactly what they need. The result makes an enormous archive feel organized, searchable, and easy to use.

Designed to Adapt and Adjust
IAEE’s content ecosystem includes webinars, proceedings, podcasts, publications, and events, all with different display requirements. Rather than forcing every content type into the same template, we designed a modular card system that adapts based on context. Layout, card copy, labels, calls to action, and more shift depending on the content type, creating a flexible system that manages complexity behind the scenes while keeping the experience consistent for users — and presenting the key info for each content type on its card.

A Website That Can Keep Up
The previous site made routine updates difficult without developer involvement, creating bottlenecks for a team managing ongoing publications and a full conference calendar. The new site was built on a robust enterprise-grade CMS designed to handle a large and growing content library, giving IAEE’s team the ability to create and manage content independently. We also structured the events section to support future growth, with the long-term goal of consolidating conference information directly within the main website instead of relying on separate event microsites.
